    Dr Cameron-Taylor completed her medicaldegree at the University of Newcastle andcompleted rural General Practice training.She subsequently undertook advancedtraining in Palliative Medicine through theRoyal Australasian College of Physicians.

    For the last seven years she has worked as a staff specialistin the Department of Palliative Care at Calvary MaterNewcastle and has a conjoint appointment at the Universityof Newcastle. Her interests include optimising a patientcentredtransition from active to palliative treatment andshe has been involved in several clinical trials. Her workin medical education has been presented at local andinternational meetings and she is currently team leader forthe provision of online spaced education in End-of-Life-Careacross the Hunter New England healthcare district.

    She is also Head of Clinical Co-ordination with CannaPacific,who are a Government Licenced Australian medical Cannabiscompany based in Newcastle and the Macleay Valley on themid-north coast of NSW. She has been actively involved inkey cannabis research, including as lead site investigator, forseveral clinical studies and is currently developing researchinitiatives involving groups such as the Universityof Melbourne.

    Erica also provides specialist palliative care to patients atLake Macquarie and Warners Bay Private Hospitals.

    The School of Health Sciences brings together Swinburne’srenowned teaching and research capacity in the areasof psychology, nutrition, health promotion, public andenvironmental health, sport science, biomedical scienceand statistics.

    Professor Thompson was also previously the head ofPhysiology Services at the Alfred Hospital, where his groupperformed lung function tests on more than 11,500 patientsper year.

    As a respiratory physiologist, Prof Thompson’s main role is totest people in lung function. Some tests include; ventilatoryfunction, lung volume and capacities and diffusing capacity.Each test is unique and has different machines and differentmeasurements.

    ‘I am passionate about this area of work because, it combinesmy interests in electronic work with physiology and there is astrong element of problem solving,’ Professor Thompson says.

    Professor Thompson completed a degree with a combinationof Physiology and Electronics and stumbled upon lung functionwhile doing some clinical rounds.
    After finishing his degree he worked in a repatriation hospitaland completed his PhD. He then studied his for a Masters andworked for 13 years in the area of ‘sleep’.
    A base degree is all that is required to work as a basic lungfunction scientist.

    ‘Lung function is a great area to get into because there are notmany of us, and it is an area which is expected to grow,’ he says.
